DVD Review: Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull
Published October 16, 2008
In 1989 at the conclusion of Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade, we watch our hero ride off into the sunset. It’s an iconic shot signifying the end of the Indiana Jones trilogy — fans of the character and actors and filmmakers felt it was a commendable send-off for this beloved character. For years there were rumors that Indy would be coming back, but Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas couldn’t agree on a story worthy of the character. Finally a script was agreed upon and Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull would be the next installment of everyone’s favorite archaeologist.
Set almost 20 years after we last saw “the man in the hat,” it's now 1957 and rather than just gloss over the fact that time has passed, the film acknowledges that Dr Jones is a bit older, but still the same character audiences have come to know and love. The film is a tribute to B-movies of that time, and has Indy and Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) going up against that popular villain of the '50s, Soviet agents, with everyone trying to find a psychic alien crystal skull.
The movie is fun. It might not be the best Indiana Jones film, but it's enjoyable nonetheless. It has all the elements from the first three films: whip-cracking action, exotic settings, the iconic redline charting Indy’s travel from location to location, danger, and adventure. Indy is as charming as ever and the chemistry he shares with former lover Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) hearkens back to when we first saw the pair in Raiders of The Lost Ark back in 1981.
The movie is different than the first three films, but time has passed and the movie embraces that and gives us little snippets of what Indy’s been up to over the last 20 years. Maybe there’ll be novels to fill in the gaps or an animated series like Star Wars: The Clone Wars is doing for the Star Wars saga. SPOILER ALERT: Shia LaBeouf does a good job as Indy and Marion’s son and is definitely his father’s son and a product of the era. Hopefully there’ll be more movies with the two of them on adventures before Indy passes the torch to Mutt.
There are a number of extras on this set. Disc one has "The Return of a Legend," which chronicles what it took to get Indiana Jones back on the big screen. It features interviews with “The Big Three” — Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas, and talks about the development going back to 1994 and how it’s been a long journey to Kingdom of The Crystal Skull.
